“If you educate a boy, you educate an individual.
If you educate a girl, you educate a community.” -African proverb
In February 2023, the inaugural class of 42 girls began the journey of their future. This year, in 2026, Millbrook Girls High School will celebrate it’s first graduating class.
Girls in poor countries like Kenya are often denied the opportunity to attend high school for socio-cultural reasons. Girls face many barriers including poverty, poor infrastructure, child marriage, exploitation, and abuse. Boys’ education is considered more important and valuable, so girls are left home to work the farm, cook, clean and tend the home.
However, educating girls has been proven to be one of the most beneficial ways to create a thriving communities, decrease poverty, improve health outcomes, and decrease child marriage. Without a high school education, girls in Kenya are relegated to a life of menial labor on the fringes of society.
“Educating girls and giving them the tools to shape their own future has an incredible multiplier effect on economic growth. It leads to increased prosperity not just for individuals but for their communities and their societies. It provides returns for decades.”
– UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon.
“Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God goes with you wherever you go.” Joshua 1:9
